Hello, my name is Bernie and I'm a three-year-old female Pit Bull/Terrier mix. I'm spayed, vaccinated, microchipped.
Although I haven't had a great life until now, I love people and am very friendly and easy going. I am desperately
looking for my forever home. Here's a brief summary of my very sad story.
I was pregnant with nine puppies when I ended up at an animal shelter in New Mexico about a year ago.
Because I was a Pit Bull/Terrier mix, I was going to be immediately put down. The staff Vet there however,
said that she would spay me so that I may have a chance at finding a home. Everyone at the animal shelter
thought I had a very nice personality and really didn't want to see me put down. Unfortunately, the surgery
didn't go well and I had some complications. The Vet had to do three separate operations.
She really thought I was not going to make it through any of them, but I proved them wrong.
At the end of it all, I ended up with some burns due to the water bottles they used the
relieve some of the swelling. This rendered me unadoptable for a while and the animal
shelter said they would have to put me down. The kind Vet took me out of the shelter
and took me home for a while, but ultimately could not keep me. She called the Animal
Rescue League in El Paso, Texas and they took me in. Long story short, it has almost
been a year since I arrived and haven't had any luck finding a home. The folks at
the Animal Rescue League are really nice, but I'm ready to find my forever home.
They say I've done really well with potty training and have not had any accidents in any of the foster homes
I've been in. I do well with larger sumissive dogs, but don't like cats at all...therefore no small dogs either.
I must have been a street survivor because I promptly buried the first 5 treats the Vet in New
Mexico gave me when she took me home. I LOVE people and am good with kids, but I jump on people
initially from excitement and sometimes when I want affection. I'm sure I can learn not to do that.
I definitely NEED a yard to run around in, as I truly enjoy being outside, but I also
like to curl up with humans, either on the couch or bed. I weigh 50 lbs. and am
one gigantic, walking muscle (i.e. very strong). I pull on the leash when I walk, but quickly
learn when corrected. I think I would be an excellent candidate for a Gentle Leader.
I would love to find a home with someone who is athletic and enjoys exercising, someone
with a yard because I don't do well in apartments at all. I know it seems like I'm
asking for a lot, but I'm just trying to be honest so that whoever takes me home
keeps me forever.

Although I'm currently located in El Paso, Texas, arrangements have been made to fly me out to
California at no cost to my new family. If you are interested in reading my entire story,
